Best Skateboarding Movie in Years

I watched Lakai Footwear‘s Fully Flared last night (thanks Stevey). Saying it’s the best sk8 video I have seen in years wouldn’t quite do it justice. It’s absolutely insane and I cannot recommend it enough.

My two favourite thrashers in the movie as far as style and technique, if I had to choose: Marc Johnson (by far) and Anthony Pappalardo.

I’m not going to say much more since I don’t want to spoil it for you, but do yourself a favour and go buy (or rent) it. You won’t regret it.

Oh, did I mention Spike Jonze was on the directors crew? Nuf’ said! 🙂

The Cross Lingual Wiki Engine Project

Alain Désilets’ (National Research Council of Canada) presentation at the PHP Québec CodeFest2008 on the challenges of massive translation collaboration in the wiki environment, and proposal for a cross lingual wiki engine concept to tackle the problem.

The presentation was followed by an intensive brainstorming session on the said engine, which itself led to a coding session after.

The video/sound is unedited and the quality isn’t fantastic, but it’s getting the word out that counts, right? 🙂

iTunes Canada Gets the TV Treatment

Patrick Tanguay led me to Apple’s announcement of the new TV programming offering through iTunes Canada.

I have to admit that I share his lack of enthusiasm for their offer… There’s just no way I’m going to spend money on 4:3 ratio video.

All my screens are 16:9 or 16:10: mac laptop, external monitors, iPhone, and so on. And whatever I’ll buy in the foreseeable future will obviously not going to be any other way.

They’re obviously targeting the last two remaining iPod models with such screen proportions, the Classic and Nano, but it’s just not for me. Sorry.

Nice try though. A bit late maybe but nice.

CBC New Media sites upgrade and consolidation

I just noticed that CBC Radio 3 has finally upgraded three massive sites for which I designed the backend software seven years ago, while living in Vancouver.

Mind you, they did also run the innovative Zed site in the meantime, but the latter has now passed on after four TV seasons. On the other hand, 120seconds.com, newmusiccanada.com and justconcerts.com have all been consolidated as sections of their main site.

My team and I built all the software used to run and manage the three sister sites, while the interface design was handled by a stream of super creative artists. Features included audio streaming, Flash-based UI (120seconds) and components, admin tools up the wazoo (for admins, DJs, artists, etc) and quite a bit more.

I think six years worth of use isn’t a bad ROI. If nothing else, I can’t be blamed for not designing and writing long lasting software. And it did score them a Webby nomination (though heavy.com wan this one).

I even like the soundtrack they chose, and they also have more OpenMoko related videos on their dedicated Youtube account. Must… Fight… Urge… And wait until October for the consumer version. Not enough time on my hands to involve myself as a developer unfortunately, but once again, it wouldn’t be the first time I say this and fall for it later on. 😉

Charles de Gaulle: Vive le Québec Libre

On July 24th 1967, French president Charles de Gaulle delivered a speech in Montreal in which he declared 4 simple yet revolutionary words, echoing the Quebec separatist slogan: Vive le Québec Libre.

After reading about the said speech for years, I finally found the video on the Web in its entirety today. Regardless of one’s (or even my) opinion on the subject, this is a historical moment by all measures.

The CBC Archives also has a newsreel for this day, highlighting the controversy this created in the rest of Canada.
