Canada Explores New Frontiers in Astroinformatics
The CANFAR platform will take advantage of CANARIE’s high-speed network and a number of open source and proprietary cloud and grid computing tools to allow the country’s astronomy researchers to better handle the vast datasets that are being generated by global observatories. It will also be propelled by the storage and compute capabilities from Compute Canada in addition to the expertise from the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics and the National Research Council of Canada.

Tax money well spent, as far as I’m concerned.

Canadian Senate Defeats Bill with no Debate
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yV8zEjgZ8VE]
There are few things that bug me as much as politicians blatantly raping lady democracy. This is one of those cases. If this is part of the Tories’ day-dream to abolish the Senate, I think they might have just found a way to get the public opinion to support it…

Canada / Nouvelle France, as of 1705
If the Louisiana Purchase had not happened, a lot more of my American friends would be speaking French today. 😉
This accession of territory affirms forever the power of the United States, and I have given England a maritime rival who sooner or later will humble her pride.

Canadian Surfing
[vimeo http://vimeo.com/15797258 w=640&h=360]
I think the GotSurf project is a great idea. Canada is one of the best cold water destination in the world and it deserves to be showcased.
I used to go camping in Tofino (BC), which is featured in the Adam DeWolfe video. The location is absolutely stunning, and the water is not that cold in the summertime. And the surf? Well, let’s just say O’Neill is holding its Coldwater Classic there as I type this (Oct 9-15th 2010).
Note: I found GotSurf via Stevey, an authentic Canadian surfer himself. 🙂
