Of Thanks and Gobble Gobbles
This weekend being Canadian Thanks Giving, I thought I’d list a few of the many things I am thankful for this year:
- My family: I have a wonderful wife and three fantastic little boys who all bring light to my life and I love them to death.
- My friends: I haven’t always been the most social person, but I’ve been trying to make a lot of efforts in the last few years, which has translated in a much saner social life.
- My job: The last year at Automattic has by far been the best of my career and I’m thinking the upcoming one will be even better. Yay!
- My health: so far so very good. All is well in Stephane-land, and will hopefully stay on this track.
- My city/province/country: I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Need I say more? 🙂

Mac OS X: It's the "little things"
It’s details like the following that sometimes make me stop and realize how fined tuned a software Mac OS X really is.
Tonight, I did the following, sequentially:
- Moved a folder to the trash, not realizing that a subfolder contained a file being written to.
- Tried to empty the trash. The Finder told me those files were still in use.
- Took the directory out and dropped it on my Desktop (not the original location)
- Inspected the files and dropped them back into their original location
Where things get interesting is that the process which was writing to the said file never crashed or in any way gave an error. It happily followed the files as they moved around, keeping on keepin’ on. Everything was handled cleanly by the Finder and abstracted from the process. Classy.
It’s also worth noting that the said process was not an Apple app, so no unfair advantages.
